Wadhurst Runners news - Ashdown Forest cross country

Hi all,

During this weeks AGM I was fortunate (I hope!) to be put forward as this years mens captain after Peter decided, after three years, to pass on the reins so here is my first message to you all! With regards to the AGM I will leave other announcements to Albert and Sara who may be putting something out soon for the elections that took place.

Firstly, can I take this opportunity to thank Peter for all of the hard work that he put in during the past few years. I know we all appreciated the effort and dedication Peter brought to the role and he will be sorely missed in this respect.

Peter has passed on the club standards records to me - these are the ones where your achievements against races are recorded for the annual cup. I will update these from the main races including all of the Sussex GP events and big races such as London Marathon. For all other races I will need to ask you to send me the event you competed in along with the time achieved (link to results page would be good). I will then capture the time. I realise this is different to now but, hopefully, not too onerous to send on the details. I still have a task to work out the points scoring so please bear with me on this for a while!

With regards to the Sussex GP we were obviously so close to the top prize last year so it would be good to see if we can improve for this - it was the narrowest of margins so even if you can only make a race or two please try as it would be great to see the 1st prize coming our way! Have a look here at the diary for 2012 to see the events you could attend.

The awards night for the Sussex Grand Prix is this Wednesday and takes place at the Jack and Jill pub near Clayton. Directions to the pub can be found here. All are welcome to attend. Peter has provided a list of the anticipated winners of at least one award so check below to see if you are one of them!

Quick reminder about the blog - race reports tend to go there but a few articles would be nice so please send them through. If anyone out there has a passing interest in helping to maintain the blog please put your name forward - would be good to have some more input! Have a look at the new design via this link.

The fourth cross country of the season took place today at Pett. This is a very interesting course which goes through woods and round filelds, up hill and down hill.

In the junior section, Wadhurst was represented by Ziggy Henry. Ziggy's result:

In the adult section, the Crowborough/Wadhurst team was affected by illness, though the field was quite small so there was an opportunity to earn good points. Kevin Perez Diaz paved the way in this respect with a classy 5th place overall followed by David Henry. Melinda Mackay was 1st in the combined team's ladies' section. An extra field was run around so times were slower this year. There were 114 finishers.

December Report

The Wadhurst Runners had a busy start to the seasonal festivities with back-to-back races at the weekend. The weather during the week before this Christmas was a stark comparison to last year’s extreme weather with snow and ice cutting the sports activity severely. This year the weather was far kinder to runners.

First up was the Ashburnham Christmas Pudding 5 mile Dash around the beautiful Ashburnham estate. The course is a mixture of road, woodland and grassy tracks. The course was changed at the last minute to avoid black ice on out-lying roads. The mud could not be avoided in the wooded areas.

Despite the early morning frost the race started in sunshine with 248 runners pounding the quiet, serene Ashburnham estate which is now the home to a Christian retreat. Uniquely, and famously, the Orangery has several enormous Camellia shrubs which were planted in 1833 and a plaque proudly proclaims they are the oldest living Camellias in the whole of Great Britain.

David Henry, one of the Waddie cross country specialists lead the Wadhurst Runners home in 21^st overall and 4^th vet 1 (age 40-44) in a time of 30 minutes and 37 seconds. The fast improving newcomer, David Salmons had a personal best and was overjoyed to finish 38^th and 5^th vet 1 in 31:38. Another PB was by Matt Seabrook who was 63^rd in 34:33. Albert Kemp was 1^st vet 6 (65-69) in98th in 38:01.

The ladies captain, Lyn Hayes, continued with her rich vein of form and was the first Waddie lady, being 3^rd lady overall and the 1^st lady vet 4 (50-54) in 33:26. Nell Neary was not to be out-done by Hayes as she was the 1^st lady vet 6 (60-64) in 129^th place in 40:41. In only her 4^th race as a Waddie Caron Joyes was another PB finisher in 92^nd place and achieved 2^nd vet 3 (45-49) in 37:57.

Other Waddie results were William Wood 110^th and 6^th vet 4 (55-59) in 39:14 and Claudia Fiedler, a guest member from Germany, in her 1^st race for the club finished in a creditable 124^th place in 40:10.

On Sunday the Waddies and Crowborough Runners took a strong combined team to the inaugural Firle 5 mile Cross Country race. This is the 3^rd race in the 6 race series part of the East Sussex Sunday Cross Country League. The new course starts near the Firle Beacon and the course consisted of a three sided triangle with a fast downhill start and a punishing very long and hard climb back up to the finish on the ridge. The wind was very icy and bitingly strong so the vehicles struggled up the early morning frosted road.

The combined team were joint 5^th after the first 3 races but the team had a spirited run finishing 3^rd so the heaved themselves up to one place to 4^th overall behind the heavy weights Hailsham Harriers, Lewes AC and Hastings Athletic Club.

Honours went to the Waddies for the first three finishers. Russell Carr 15^th in 35:16; David Burfoot 23^rd in 36:35 and David Henry 25^th 13 seconds behind. The next three team finishers were by the Crows – Bryan Tapsell (team captain) 27^th 36:53; Roger Stone 36^th 38:04 and Kevin Batell 38^th 38:23.

The ladies team was lead home by the Crows Louise Ellis 95^th 47:30 and included Brenda Styles 104^th 49:24 and the Waddie Sara Wrenn 117^th 1:07:30.

The Bryan Tapsell said “I am proud of the combined team’s performance which has improved our move up the tree. The next cross country race is 6^th January 2012 at Pett Levels, near Hastings”.

Christmas Pudding Dash & other races

At least 9 Waddies went to Ashburnham for the Christmas Pudding Dash and Lynn Hayes, Albert and Helen Neary all won their categories.

There may have been more as there are some unknowns and some unnamed pole carriers in the results.

Firle Cross Country

On a bright bitterly cold day 8 Waddies competed in the Cross Country at Firle. This was new course for 2011.

In the junior race, Ziggi Henry was 4^th.

There were 4 finishers.

In the senior race there were 7 Waddies including Sara Wrenn. Billed as a 4.9 miler, the times suggest it was longer and that the measurer lost satellite down in the dip. I measured it on my footpod as 5.158 miles. It was a tough course, not dissimilar to Warren Hill, with a fast downhill start and a long climb back up again to the top of the Downs. When you got there, it was up again, this time against the wind before a fast downhill/flattish section to the Finish. The Waddies took the top 3 places in the combined Crowborough/Wadhurst team. I am unsure why there is no time shown for Sara Wrenn.

There were 116 finishers.

Fowlmead

branch of Wadhurst Runners, the Pain brothers and our burgeoning triathlete, Emma Birks ventured to Sholden Colliery for the Fowlmead 5 mile race. Mike won his category in a very quick time, beating his time in the Hastings and Staplehurst 5 mile races earlier in the year. It is not known whether it was a lifetime best. Andy was 5th and thrashed his Hastings 5 mile time. Emma got a pb.

Brighton 10k

Brighton 10k

There was an excellent turn-out today for the final SGP race of this season, the Brighton 10k. The weather in Britghon was glorious, wall to wall sunshine and a blue sky. There was a light easterly breeze which headed on the home straight.

The Waddies did themselves proud and there were some fantastic personal achievements with pbs for a number of members including Mike Pain, Nick Brooker and Neil and Wansze Walbridge. Well done!

5 Waddies turned out for the 2nd Cross Country on a mild windy day at Warren Hill.

Tim Clements succeeded in turning his fantastic Tuesday night Club run performance into his race pace and led the Waddies home.

Albert read a poem for Remembrance Sunday before the start of the race when 2 minutes' silence was observed.

Crowborough & Beckley 10k

Crowborough lived up to its usual reputation today in as far as it seemed cold before the race and it was certainly not a day when you were going to get too hot running.

A merry band of 17 Waddies turned up for the 25th running of the Crowborough 10 despite the Beckley 10k being run on the same day. to mark the occasion a special 25 anniversary running shirt was given to each finisher. The water in the ford was sufficiently low to enable runners to run through it without getting their feet wet inside.

Despite a magificent start by Neil Walbridge who looked as is he was trying to vie for 1st place, the Waddies were led home by David Burfoot. Lyn Hayes had a stupendous race, her best time for the course EVER - 45 seconds off her previous best. Well done Lyn on a maginificent effort!

Lyn Hayes and Helen Neary won their age groups. Well done!

Beckley 10k
Meanwhile the Burkes were marooned down in Beckley staging their own race, the Beckley 10k which 3 Waddies competed in.

Mike Pain continued his run of exceptional form and finished 1st Vet 2 in 4th position overall. A fantastic achievement. David henry was 3rd Male Vet 1.

Barns Green Half Marathon

14 Waddies made the long journey to Barns Green today for the 29th running of the Barn's Green Half Marathon.

It was a rather dreary drizzly day producing some quite good conditions for running. Some excelled, a few were below par.

Mike Pain produced an excellent performance and scored a massive pb. Neil Walbridge also got a pb.Ciaran Osborn was gutted to be ovetaken by Mike at the 12 mile point, but also did brilliantly so soon after his triumph in the Beachy Head Marathon.

The accolades are reserved for Helen Neary who won her category of 13.

Lynn Hayes was going great guns until her tummy let her down and she lost about 4 minutes on a forray into the woods but still scored a commendable sub 1:40 time and achieved 5th place in her group of 40. But for the lost 4 minutes, Lyn would also have won her group.

Other top 10 category finishers were Mike Pain and Ali Farrall (8^th) and Albert (9th).

Well done everybody and to many thanks to Emma, Izzy, Tiffany and Wansze for their support, which was greatly appreciated.

The Fenland 10 mile

Martin and Cathy Burke competed in the Fenland 10 mile race on Sunday 30 October. This is an annual race organised by members of Fenland Running Club. Starting at Marshland High School in West Walton, the race is run on a flat course that offers great potential for personal bests.

Whether or not Cathy or Martin secured personal bests they did not say.

The first cross country of the season was held at Whitbread Hollow, Eastbourne on Sunday. The conditions were good and the ground was hard.

The Waddies were very poorly represented in the combined Crowborough/Wadhurst Team. However, David Burfoot and Kevin Perez Diaz made up in quality for the lack of quantity by finishing as a one/two in the combined team in 12th and 25th places respectively. Well done the pair of you!

There were 159 finishers and the combined team finished in 5th place out of 10 teams.
